How a XAU/USD lot works

One standard lot of gold is 100 troy ounces. Price is quoted in dollars per ounce, so every $1.00 move is worth $100 per lot, $10 per mini lot (0.1) and $1 per micro lot (0.01).

Brokers disagree on what a gold "pip" is — some call $0.01 a pip, some $0.10 — which is why sizing gold in pips goes wrong so often. Measure the stop in dollars of price instead: an entry at 2,650.00 with a stop at 2,645.00 is a $5 stop, whatever your broker calls it.

Gold's stops are wide next to forex because the instrument is. A New York session can move $20–$40, so a $5–$10 stop is ordinary and the lot size has to shrink to match it. Check your broker's contract spec once: a few quote 1 lot as 10 oz or 1 oz.

Worked out with the calculator above. Left: a $10,000 account risking 1% ($100). Right: a $100,000 prop firm account risking 0.5% ($500).

Frequently asked questions

How much is 1 lot of gold worth per $1 move?

$100. A standard lot is 100 ounces and gold is priced per ounce, so each $1.00 change in price moves a 1-lot position by $100. A 0.10 lot moves $10 and a 0.01 lot moves $1.

What lot size should I use for gold on a $1,000 account?

At 1% risk you risk $10. With a $5 stop that is 10 ÷ (5 × 100) = 0.02 lots; with a $10 stop it is 0.01 lots, the smallest size most brokers allow. Wider stops on a small account mean you cannot risk only 1% — widen the account or tighten the setup, never the risk.

Is a gold pip $0.01 or $0.10?

It depends on the broker, which is why this calculator works in dollars of price instead. Enter your entry and stop as prices and the size is correct either way.
