The short version
Why forex needs proper backtesting
Forex has a personality most tools ignore: the market has sessions. A setup that prints on the London open behaves nothing like the same setup in the dead Asian hours. Spreads, pip values and news windows all matter — and a backtest that doesn't respect them isn't telling you the truth about your edge.
Proper backtesting software lets you replay those sessions candle by candle, so you learn when your edge fires, not just whether it exists.
What to test on forex
Start with session behaviour — the classic Asian-range-into-London-expansion, and how price reacts through the London–New York overlap. Test one pair and one setup at a time: EURUSD for clean, liquid structure, GBPUSD for volatility, USDJPY for trend and the JPY pip quirk.
And size every test correctly. A pip is 0.0001 (0.01 on JPY pairs), and the right position depends on your stop distance — the position size calculator handles the pip math so your backtest reflects real risk.
How to backtest forex in CRTLAB
CRTLAB runs in your browser — no MetaTrader, no downloads, no data wrangling. Pick a pair, replay real history one candle at a time, mark your setups by session, and let the app log every trade and score your win rate and average R automatically.
That's a deliberate trade against the paid desktop simulators most FX traders end up comparing it with. If you're weighing one of those, the Forex Tester alternative page lays out what each side genuinely wins on — instrument coverage and tick-level spread modelling against no install and no licence. For the browser-based competitor most FX traders shortlist instead, see the FX Replay alternative page.
All four FX majors — plus the indices, gold, silver, oil, crypto and the US stocks — open on the first chart with the full history on each. There is no licence to buy: stepping the chart forward uses candles, 10,000 free sample first, or unlimited at $14.99 a month.
The free forex backtesting options, compared
"Free" means something different at every vendor, and the difference is usually the one thing a forex trader needs. Here is what each free option actually lets you do on an FX pair, and where it stops.
| Free option | What you get on forex | Where it stops |
|---|---|---|
| MetaTrader 4/5 Strategy Tester | Automated testing of an Expert Advisor on your broker's own history, including modelled spread. Genuinely free. | It tests code. Replaying by hand needs a third-party button-EA that only registers a click when a tick arrives. Details here. |
| TradingView free plan | Excellent FX charts and every indicator you could want. | Bar Replay is listed from the paid Essential tier up, and intraday replay depth depends on the plan. Tier by tier. |
| FX Replay free plan | Browser replay built for forex, with checklists. | 2 sessions, 50 trades and 1 week of data retention. Pro is $35 a month. Full comparison. |
| Forex Tester demo | The deepest manual FX simulator there is, tick data and all. | A trial of a paid licence plus data package, and the desktop app is Windows-only. What it costs. |
| Soft4FX Forex Simulator demo | A replay plugin inside MetaTrader 4 or 5, with step, rewind and speed controls on downloaded tick data. | 5 trades per simulation, 2 sample years of data and no saving. Windows only, installed into a broker's demo terminal. Full comparison. |
| CRTLAB free plan | All four majors on the full archive, every timeframe, every tool, stats scored automatically — 10,000 candles of replay as a free sample. | No EAs, no optimiser, no spread modelling at tick level, no importing your own data. Unlimited replay is $14.99 a month. |
Free-plan limits checked against each vendor's own pages on the date at the top of this page. Vendors change their plans often — confirm before you commit.
How much forex history the free sample actually covers
Forex trades roughly 24 hours a day, five days a week, so the candle count per week is fixed by your timeframe. Stepping every bar, 10,000 candles is about 21 weeks of 15-minute EURUSD, about 7 weeks of 5-minute, or roughly 7 trading days of 1-minute data. On the 1-hour chart it is over a year and a half.
That arithmetic tells you how to spend the free sample well. Pick the timeframe your entries are actually taken on, not the one that looks most rigorous. A London-open setup read on the 15-minute chart gets you through several months of sessions in one allowance, which is a real sample. The same setup on the 1-minute chart gets you a week and a bit, which is a mood.
If you trade the sessions, go straight to them: the London session backtester and New York session backtester open a chart already framed on the window that matters.
Frequently asked questions
Is there free forex backtesting software?
CRTLAB is free to try. You get EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY and AUDUSD on the full archive, with every tool the product has, for your first 10,000 candles of replay — roughly two hours of stepping through a chart, no card needed. After the sample, unlimited replay is $14.99 a month, cancel any time. The FX bars are rebuilt from the quoted book rather than trade prints, which is what stops one-minute cable candles collapsing into flat dashes in the thin hours.
What is the best free forex backtesting software?
It depends on whether your strategy is code. If it is an Expert Advisor, MetaTrader's Strategy Tester is free and runs on your broker's own data — nothing beats that for mechanical rules. If you trade by reading the chart, you need replay, and the free replay options differ mainly in how much they let you do before asking for money: TradingView keeps Bar Replay on paid tiers, FX Replay's free plan stops at 2 sessions and 50 trades, and CRTLAB gives every pair and timeframe with a weekly candle allowance.
Can I backtest forex on a Mac?
Yes, in the browser. Forex Tester's desktop app is Windows-only and MetaTrader on macOS runs inside a Wine compatibility layer. The full breakdown is on the <a href="/backtesting-software-for-mac">backtesting software for Mac</a> page.
Which forex pairs can I backtest?
The four majors — EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY and AUDUSD — alongside NAS100, US30, SP500, GER40, gold, silver, oil and seven crypto pairs, so you can test your edge across correlated markets.
Do I need to download anything?
No. It's fully browser-based — pick a pair and start replaying in about 30 seconds. No MetaTrader, no plugins, no spreadsheets.
