Trusting the day, not the hour

Gold's busiest and quietest weekdays differ by about 7%. Its busiest and quietest hours differ by 2.5×. Pick your hours first.

The short answer, market by market

The busiest hour is the one-hour candle with the largest average high-to-low range, in New York time. The quietest is the calmest hour the market is properly open. The last column is how many times more the busy hour moves.

Eleven of the thirteen peak in the same two hours: 9:00 to 11:00 New York. That is not a coincidence, and it is the most useful thing on this page.

Why the New York morning moves everything

Three things stack up between 8:00 and 12:00 New York. US data lands at 8:30 and 10:00. US stocks open at 9:30, and the cash open drags index futures, gold and the dollar with it. And London is still trading until about 11:30, so the two biggest pools of money are active at once. On gold that window averaged $22.85 an hour against $14.00 for London, 1.6 times as much. On the Nasdaq it was 2.1 times. Even EUR/USD, a European pair, moved 1.4 times as much per hour in the New York morning as in the London session.

For index traders the 9:00–10:00 bar holds the 9:30 open, which is why the S&P 500's busiest bar is actually 10:00–11:00: the half-hour after the open carries into it. The ICT Silver Bullet window, 10:00–11:00 New York, sits in the second-busiest hour on almost every market here, which is most of why it gets talked about.

The exceptions worth knowing

The DAX peaks at the Frankfurt open. Its busiest hour was 3:00–4:00 New York, the 09:00 cash open in Frankfurt, at 125.9 pts. The New York morning comes second. If you trade the DAX on a New York schedule, you are missing its best hour.

The yen trades in Asia. USD/JPY's peak is still US data at 8:00–9:00 New York (35.8 pips), but its Tokyo hours average about as much as its London hours. For almost every other pair, the Asian session is the quiet part of the day.

Crypto never closes and still keeps New York hours. Bitcoin's busiest hour was 10:00–11:00 New York at $907, over twice its quietest. Its average Saturday moved 58% less than its average Monday. The weekend is not a second chance at the week, it is a different market.

The day matters less than the hour

Traders spend a lot of energy on which day to trade. The data says it barely matters for most markets. Gold's busiest weekday (Friday) averaged only 7% more range than its quietest (Tuesday). The gap between its busiest and quietest hour was 2.5×. Choose your hours first and your days second, unless you trade crypto, where the weekend really is different.

How far the whole day travels is a separate question, with its own surprise: on every one of these markets, fewer than half of days reach their own 20-day average range. The average daily range tool has the numbers, and how much of today's range is probably left.

Volatility is room, not an edge

A busy hour gives a setup somewhere to go. It also runs stops, widens spreads and fakes out breakouts, so a strategy that works at 9:45 can fail at 2:15 on the same market. This table tells you where the movement is. It cannot tell you whether your setup works there.

The way to find out is to log the hour of every trade and split your results by it. Most traders who do this find their edge lives in one or two hours and the rest of their trades give it back. Replay those hours on real history before you trade them. The New York session backtester and the London session backtester open a chart with the session already marked, the session times tool shows when each market opens in your time zone, and the kill zone reference covers the ICT version of the same idea. Gold and Nasdaq traders should read the hour-by-hour sections on backtesting gold and backtesting NAS100.

How we measured it

One-hour candles from CRTLAB's own archive, 18 Sept 2024 – 18 Sept 2026 for everything except the DAX, which starts on 11 Mar 2025. For each market we averaged the high-to-low range of every candle that opened in a given New York clock hour. Daylight saving is handled by the calendar, so the London open is always 3:00 New York. Weekday figures are the range of a whole New York trading day, 18:00 to 17:00, and skip holiday half-days. The 17:00 rollover and any hour a market is effectively closed are left out of “quietest”.

Two limits worth stating. Averages hide news days: a CPI morning's 8:30 hour can be three times the normal one, and a holiday week can be half. And your broker's feed will differ slightly from ours on CFDs and forex, though not by enough to move which hours are busy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to trade gold?

The New York morning. Over the two years to 18 Sept 2026, gold's busiest hour was 9:00–10:00 New York, averaging $24.98 of range, and the 8:00–12:00 block averaged $22.85 an hour against $14.00 for London. The quietest trading hour, 16:00–17:00, averaged $9.91. In London time the busy window is roughly 13:00 to 17:00.

What is the best time to trade the Nasdaq (NAS100)?

9:00–10:00 New York, the hour that holds the 9:30 cash open, averaged 165.5 pts — 3.8× the quietest hour. The 8:00–12:00 block moved 2.1× as much per hour as the London session. After lunch it drops away, and overnight hours average a third of the open or less.

What is the best time to trade forex?

The London–New York overlap, not the London open. EUR/USD's two busiest hours were 10:00–11:00 and 8:00–9:00 New York (23.8 pips and 23.5 pips), when US data lands at 8:30 and 10:00 while London is still trading. The London open hour itself, 3:00–4:00 New York, averaged 18.7 pips. USD/JPY is the exception worth knowing: its Tokyo hours are busy enough to trade.

What is the most volatile hour of the trading day?

For almost every US-linked market it is 9:00–10:00 or 10:00–11:00 New York. That was the busiest hour for gold, silver, oil, the Nasdaq, the Dow, the S&P 500, EUR/USD, GBP/USD, AUD/USD, Bitcoin and Ethereum in our data. The DAX is the one that peaks elsewhere: 3:00–4:00 New York, which is the 09:00 Frankfurt cash open.

What is the best day of the week to trade?

It matters far less than the hour. Gold's busiest weekday (Friday) averaged only 7% more range than its quietest (Tuesday); EUR/USD's gap was 12%. The gap between gold's busiest and quietest HOUR was 2.5×. Pick your hours first. Crypto is different: Bitcoin's average Saturday moved 58% less than its average Monday.

Does daylight saving time change the best time to trade?

Not in New York time, which is why this tool measures in it: US data, the 9:30 cash open and the 17:00 rollover all move with New York's clock. In London or UTC the window shifts by an hour when the clocks change, and for about three weeks each spring and autumn the US and UK are on different schedules, so the London–New York gap is four hours instead of five.

What is the best time to trade Bitcoin?

Bitcoin trades all day, but it still keeps New York hours: its busiest hour was 10:00–11:00 New York at $907 of average range, against $419 at 6:00–7:00. Weekdays move far more than weekends — Monday averaged $3,698 of daily range, Saturday $1,562.

Is the most volatile time the best time for my strategy?

Only if your strategy needs room. Busy hours give a setup somewhere to go, and they also run stops, widen spreads and fake out breakouts. Quiet hours suit range fades and mean reversion. The honest answer comes from your own trades: log the hour of every entry, split the results by hour, and replay the hours you are unsure about before you trade them live.
