A Soft4FX Forex Simulator Alternative That Needs No MetaTrader
Soft4FX's Forex Simulator is one of the most recommended ways to backtest by hand, and for a good reason: it turns the MetaTrader terminal a lot of forex traders already use into a proper replay tool. This page explains exactly what it is, what it takes to get running, what it costs, and where a browser-based replay is the better fit. Every Soft4FX detail below comes from Soft4FX's own pricing, download and tutorial pages, checked on 15 September 2026, and there is a section on where Soft4FX is simply the stronger tool, because for some traders it is.
What Soft4FX's Forex Simulator actually is
It is a plugin for MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5, not a standalone program. You run it inside the terminal, and it replaces the live feed with historical data you download through it. Soft4FX lists three tick-data sources, Dukascopy, TrueFX and HistData, with 10 to 20 years of tick data including real variable spreads, across 60 forex pairs, gold, silver, bitcoin, ethereum and 12 stock indexes.
The replay controls are the ones a manual backtester wants: pause and resume, a speed control, and step and rewind candle by candle. On top of that it manages trades for you, with stop loss, take profit, trailing stops and break-even, and it ships an economic calendar with data from 2007, a sessions window, a risk-based position size calculator and export to Excel or an HTML report. Trading several symbols in one simulation is available in the MT5 version only.
Pricing is simple. A free demo with every feature but three limits: 5 trades per simulation, 2 sample years of data, and no saving or loading a simulation. And a lifetime licence at $109 plus tax, paid once, for one user on two MetaTrader accounts, with free updates and a 14-day no-questions refund.
What it takes to get it running
None of the setup is hard, but all of it assumes a Windows desktop. The download page lists Windows 7, 8, 10 or 11 with .NET Framework 4.5 for the MT4 build, and Windows 10 or 11 with .NET 8 for MT5. There is no macOS version listed.
You also need MetaTrader itself, which Soft4FX's own instructions tell you to download from a broker by opening a demo account. Then the plugin file goes into the terminal's data folder (for MT4, the MQL4\Experts folder), MetaTrader is restarted, "Allow DLL imports" is switched on in the Expert Advisor options, and the simulator is started from the Navigator. After that, you download the history you want to test on.
On a Mac, a Chromebook or a work laptop you cannot install software on, that list becomes a Windows virtual machine first. Backtesting software for Mac covers what that route costs for every desktop tool, not just this one.
Soft4FX and CRTLAB, side by side
The two answer the same question, can I trade real history by hand without seeing the future, from opposite ends. One lives inside the terminal you already know; the other lives in a browser tab.

Where Soft4FX is the better choice
A comparison page that only lists the competitor's weaknesses is not worth reading, so plainly: if spread matters to your strategy, Soft4FX's data is the better fit. Tick data with real variable spreads models what a scalper actually pays around news and session opens. CRTLAB replays candles and does not model spread at tick level. On a 10-pip stop that difference is real, and why backtest results differ from live shows how quickly it adds up.
Forex breadth. Sixty pairs against CRTLAB's four majors. If you trade crosses or exotics, this is the end of the conversation.
Your own terminal. You keep the MetaTrader charts, templates and indicators you already use, and trailing stops and break-even run automatically, the way your live account behaves.
Paying once. $109 is a little over seven months of CRTLAB's unlimited plan. If you are on Windows, already use MetaTrader, and expect to backtest heavily for longer than that, the licence is the cheaper route, and the 14-day refund makes it low-risk to find out.
Where CRTLAB is different
Nothing between you and the first candle. No terminal, no broker demo, no DLL setting, no data download. Open a market and the right-hand side of the chart is already hidden. That matters most on a Mac, and on any day when the twenty minutes of setup is the reason the backtest does not happen.
The free allowance holds a real sample. Soft4FX's demo is a good way to learn the interface, but five trades per simulation cannot tell you anything about an edge. The backtest sample size calculator puts the useful range in the hundreds. CRTLAB's free 10,000 candles a week is about 21 weeks of 15-minute EURUSD stepped bar by bar, with no trade cap inside it.
Built for smart-money testing. Fair value gaps, order blocks, liquidity sweeps, market structure shifts, opening ranges and weekly gaps are drawn by the chart, and every trade you mark is logged and scored as the sample grows, so the result is on screen rather than in an export. It also covers what a forex plugin does not: US index CFDs, 17 US stocks and ETFs and seven crypto pairs.
Which one to pick
Pick Soft4FX if you are on Windows, you already live in MetaTrader, you trade forex pairs beyond the majors, or spread is a material part of your cost per trade. It is a mature tool at a fair one-time price.
Pick a browser replay if you are on a Mac or a machine you cannot install on, you trade indices, gold, crypto or US stocks as much as forex, or you want ICT and SMC concepts drawn for you while you test. If you are comparing browser tools with each other, the FX Replay comparison and the Forex Tester comparison cover the other two names that come up.
Whichever you choose, the tool is the easy part. Writing the setup down tightly enough that you would mark the same candle twice is what decides whether the backtest means anything, and how to write trading rules you can actually backtest is the place to start.
Soft4FX's prices, limits and requirements can change. Check Soft4FX's current pricing page rather than trusting any comparison page, including this one.
Frequently asked questions
Is Soft4FX Forex Simulator free?
There is a free demo with every feature, limited to 5 trades per simulation and 2 sample years of data, and it cannot save or load a simulation. The full version is a lifetime licence at $109 plus tax, paid once, as of September 2026.
Does Soft4FX work on a Mac?
Soft4FX's download page lists Windows only: Windows 7 to 11 for the MT4 build and Windows 10 or 11 for the MT5 build, both with .NET. On a Mac that means running Windows in a virtual machine first. A browser-based replay tool avoids the question entirely.
Do I need a broker account to use Soft4FX?
You need MetaTrader 4 or 5, and Soft4FX's own installation guide says to download it from a broker by opening a demo account. The plugin then runs inside that terminal on the historical data you download through it.
What is a free alternative to Soft4FX?
For manual candle-by-candle backtesting with nothing to install, CRTLAB runs in the browser on 38 markets with every feature open and 10,000 candles of replay free each week, no card needed. It does not replay tick data or model spread, so a scalper who needs that should stay with a tick-data tool.
Is Soft4FX better than Forex Tester?
They are different shapes. Soft4FX is a plugin inside MetaTrader with a one-time licence; Forex Tester is its own desktop application for Windows plus a separate browser product, sold with data packages. The Forex Tester comparison page on this site lays out that product line in detail.
Can CRTLAB replace Soft4FX completely?
Not for everyone. It does not run inside MetaTrader, use your MT indicators or templates, replay tick data, model variable spreads, or cover forex beyond the four majors. It is built for testing discretionary setups by eye on candles, with smart-money overlays drawn and every trade scored.
