News-aware backtesting

Backtest With Real News on the Chart

Almost every backtest quietly deletes the days that matter. Skip the CPI print, skip NFP, skip FOMC — and end up with a strategy that has never met the thing most likely to break it. CRTLAB marks real economic releases directly on the replay chart, so you can test through them instead of around them.

Why skipping news ruins a backtest

Removing news days from a backtest does not remove the risk from the strategy. It removes the evidence of the risk. Your win rate rises, your worst drawdown shrinks, and the numbers look like something you can size up on — right up until a live release takes a month back in nine minutes.

This is the most expensive kind of measurement error, because it fails in the direction that makes you more confident. A backtest that flatters you is worse than no backtest at all.

There is a second, subtler cost. If you never replay a release, you never find out which part of your setup breaks. Usually the entry was fine and the stop was in a place that only survives quiet conditions — and that is a fixable problem you will never discover by avoiding the day.

What news-aware replay actually gives you

The releases are on the chart, on the time axis, as you step through history. You are not cross-referencing a calendar in a second tab and counting candles backwards to work out which one was the print.

You can filter to high-impact only, which is usually what you want: the red-folder releases are the ones that move price enough to matter, and a chart marked with every minor data point is a chart you stop reading.

Because it is candle-by-candle replay, you can stop on the bar before the release, place the trade you would genuinely have taken, and then step forward one candle at a time. You find out what happened to your stop in the order it actually happened — not as a single red number in a results table.

A routine that gives you a real answer

Pick a market that is genuinely news-sensitive — gold and the dollar pairs are the obvious ones — and a month of history. Turn the calendar on, set it to high-impact, and replay at the timeframe you trade.

Every time a marked release comes up, stop before it. Write down the trade you would have taken and where the stop goes. Then step through the release candle by candle and record what happened. Ten to fifteen releases is enough to see a pattern.

What you are looking for is not a win rate. It is whether the shape of the loss changes — whether news losses are the same size as your normal ones or three times bigger. If they are three times bigger, you have found the actual risk in your account, and you can decide whether to stand aside, widen, or size down.

Plenty of good strategies simply go flat for thirty minutes. Replay is how you find out whether that rule costs you anything, rather than adopting it on vibes.

Which markets this matters most for

Gold is the extreme case — XAUUSD reacts to CPI, Fed policy and geopolitics, and its release candles are large enough to take out a stop that looked generous ten seconds earlier. The dollar pairs move hard on NFP and rate decisions. Indices care about Fed language more than the number itself.

Crypto is the interesting exception: it trades through everything, has no scheduled releases of its own, and increasingly reacts to the same macro prints as everything else. Replaying it against the economic calendar is the fastest way to see how much of that correlation is real.

Frequently asked questions

Which news releases are shown?

Real scheduled economic releases, marked on the chart at the time they actually happened. You can filter to high-impact only, which is the setting most people want — the red-folder events are the ones that move price enough to change a trade.

Should I trade news or avoid it?

That is exactly the question a backtest can answer for you, and it is worth more than any general advice. Replay ten or fifteen releases with your own setup and compare the size of those losses to your normal ones. If they are much bigger, standing aside is cheap. If they are not, you have been avoiding a day that was fine.

Does this work on any timeframe?

Release markers are most useful on intraday timeframes, where a single candle is short enough that the news candle is genuinely distinct. On a daily chart the release is buried inside a bar that also contains everything else that happened.

Is it free?

Yes, and there is no card and no trial timer. You get gold, the dollar pairs and the indices, with every tool the product has, for 2,000 candles of replay — about two hours of stepping through a chart. After that you top up for $5, or pay $19.99 once and never think about it again. Nothing you buy expires. The economic calendar overlay is included — the releases are on the chart whether or not you ever pay for anything.
