Backtest Ethereum (ETHUSD) — Candle by Candle, Free

Ethereum trades continuously, which sounds simpler than a futures market and is actually harder to backtest well. With no close, no open and no weekend gap, every session-based rule you imported from FX or indices quietly loses its anchor — and most traders don't notice until the backtest says something strange.

What 24/7 actually changes

No daily open means "above the open is premium" needs a definition you choose rather than one the exchange gives you. No weekend gap means gap-fill strategies have nothing to fill. And a "daily high" depends entirely on where you cut the day, which for a market with no close is a convention rather than a fact.

None of that makes crypto untestable — it makes the definitions your responsibility. Decide where your day starts before you run the test, write it down, and keep it fixed. That single discipline is the difference between a crypto backtest and a set of impressions.

Ethereum's own character

ETH is correlated with Bitcoin and typically more volatile, with its own flow around network events and its own periods of decoupling. Volatility clusters hard: quiet stretches and violent stretches, with the transitions arriving faster than in most traditional markets.

That clustering is why an ATR-adaptive stop like the Chandelier Exit or a Supertrend is worth testing here specifically — a fixed stop that's correct during a quiet week is nowhere near correct during a loud one.

Running the test

Open ETHUSD and step forward candle by candle. The free tier covers the most recent two weeks of real data; Pro opens the full history, which for an asset with regimes this distinct is where a strategy is genuinely tested rather than sampled. The obvious control is the same rules on Bitcoin.

Frequently asked questions

Can I backtest Ethereum for free?

Yes — ETHUSD is on the free tier with the most recent two weeks of data, no card and no account.

How do I handle the missing daily open in crypto?

Pick a convention and fix it before the test — UTC midnight and the New York session open are the two common choices. What matters is that it doesn't change mid-backtest, because every level derived from it moves when it does.

Does Ethereum data include weekends?

Yes. It trades continuously, so the replay does too — which makes it a useful control against markets that gap, if you're testing whether a strategy depends on the gap.
