Backtest Avalanche (AVAXUSD) — Candle by Candle, Free

Avalanche is where the gap between a backtest and a live account gets its clearest demonstration. A mid-cap alt has a thinner book than Bitcoin, and on a thinner book the cost of getting in and out stops being a rounding error. Plenty of strategies that look fine on AVAX in replay are negative once you charge them what the fill actually costs.

The cost your backtest is not charging you

A replay fills you at the price you clicked. A real venue fills you at the price available for your size, and on a mid-cap alt those two can diverge meaningfully — especially during exactly the fast moves your strategy wants to trade, when the book is thinnest.

So run the arithmetic explicitly rather than hoping. Take your logged trades, subtract a realistic round-trip cost from every single one, and look at what survives. A strategy averaging 0.4R per trade with a 0.15R cost is a completely different business from the one your journal shows. Why backtest results differ from live covers the other three places the gap comes from.

High beta, thin book — the combination that punishes fixed stops

AVAX moves further than the majors on the same market impulse, and it does it into less depth. That combination means a stop distance carried over from a Bitcoin strategy is proportionally tighter and more likely to be reached by a thin-book spike rather than by a real move.

Which makes this a good instrument for testing adaptive stops specifically. The chart opens with Supertrend plotted — an ATR band that widens when volatility expands — and the comparison worth running is that against a fixed-percentage stop on the identical entries. Size both with the position size calculator at AVAX's own volatility, not at the majors'.

Backtesting Avalanche in CRTLAB

Open AVAXUSD and step forward one candle at a time. It trades continuously, so there are no session breaks and no weekend gap, and every timeframe from 1 minute to weekly is free and ungated. The free tier covers the most recent two weeks of real data; Pro opens the full history.

The instructive comparison is the same rule set on Solana, Ethereum and Bitcoin. Four assets, one log format — and the spread between the four results, once you have charged each one its real costs, tells you whether you have a strategy or a preference for one chart.

Frequently asked questions

Can I backtest Avalanche for free?

Yes — AVAXUSD is on the free tier with the most recent two weeks of real data, no card and no account.

Why would a strategy work on AVAX in replay and fail live?

Most often, execution cost. A replay fills you at the price you clicked; a thinner book does not, particularly during fast moves. Subtract a realistic round-trip cost from every logged trade and re-read the result before you trade it.

Should I use the same stop I use on Bitcoin?

No. AVAX's typical excursion is larger and its book is thinner, so a Bitcoin-sized stop is proportionally tighter and more likely to be hit by a spike than by a move. Re-size for AVAX's own volatility before concluding the strategy fails on it.

What's worth testing on a mid-cap alt?

Exits and sizing, more than entries. Entry logic transfers between correlated crypto assets reasonably well; what does not transfer is the stop distance and the cost assumption, and those are what decide the equity curve here.
