Backtest Cardano (ADAUSD) — Candle by Candle, Free

Cardano is the instrument that exposes a statistical mistake almost every crypto trader makes. ADA is heavily correlated with Bitcoin and tends to follow rather than lead — so a hundred ADA setups and a hundred BTC setups are not two hundred independent tests of your edge. They are closer to one hundred tests counted twice.

Correlation is a sample-size problem, not a trivia fact

Backtesting rests on one assumption: that your occurrences are independent enough that counting them means something. Highly correlated instruments break it quietly. If ADA, SOL and ETH all turn because Bitcoin turned, then your setup firing on all four is one market event that your journal recorded as four wins — and your measured win rate is far more confident than the evidence supports.

The correction is not to avoid correlated markets. It is to know which of your trades were the same trade. Log the date alongside every setup, and when you count your sample, count distinct days as well as distinct trades. The gap between those two numbers is how much of your confidence was double-counted. The sample size calculator tells you how many genuinely independent occurrences the edge you think you have actually requires.

Following, not leading — and what that means for entries

ADA's large moves have generally arrived on the back of a broad crypto move rather than ahead of one. Practically, that shows up as a small but real lag: the structure break you are trading on ADA has often already happened on Bitcoin.

That is testable rather than folklore, and it is the single most valuable thing to measure here. Replay ADA and Bitcoin over the same stretch and log, for each of your ADA setups, whether the equivalent BTC signal came first. If it consistently did, you have not found an ADA strategy — you have found a slow way to trade Bitcoin, and you should either trade the faster instrument or build the lag into the rules deliberately.

Backtesting Cardano in CRTLAB

Open ADAUSD and step forward candle by candle. Every timeframe from 1 minute to weekly is available and none of them are gated; the free tier covers the most recent two weeks of real data, and Pro opens the full history — which matters more here than on most instruments, because ADA's character is very different in a broad crypto bull run than in the long flat stretches between them.

The chart opens with a 50 and 200 exponential moving average plotted, which is the right starting frame for an instrument that trends in long, slow legs rather than in sharp impulses. Both periods are editable from the legend.

Frequently asked questions

Can I backtest Cardano for free?

Yes — ADAUSD is on the free tier with the most recent two weeks of real data, no card and no account required.

Does testing ADA add anything if I already tested Bitcoin?

Less than the trade count suggests. The two are heavily correlated, so many of your ADA setups are the same market event as your BTC ones. Count distinct days as well as distinct trades and the difference between those two numbers is how much of your sample was double-counted.

What's the best timeframe for backtesting ADA?

The hourly and above tend to be cleaner — ADA's intraday noise is substantial relative to most stop sizes, and its real moves develop over hours rather than minutes. Every timeframe from 1 minute to weekly is free, so test yours rather than take that on trust.

Does ADA gap or have session breaks?

No — it trades continuously, so there is no weekend gap and no daily close. That makes it a useful control if you are testing whether a strategy quietly depends on a session boundary.
